this story started about 3 years ago so i'll start from the very begining....
when i was 14/15 years old (im 17 now) i went out with an 18 year old friend of mine...he gave me the keys to his car and i was driving...i went through a stop sign(complete mistake, everyone was very sober) and we hit another car that was backing up into us on the side...the other car was totalled and our car was smashed bad but no one was hurt.
at the time no one called the cops and no reports were filed. my friend paid $2000 to fix the damages of the other car and another $1000 to the people in the car.
Back then i offered to help pay but he didnt want to take my money and he told me he would take care of it (he didnt want to tell me how) ...i had said that if he ever wanted me to pay him back he should let me know but he just told me not to worry about it....we were friends for a couple of months after that and then we just stopped talking.
i havent spoken to him in almost 2 years now and suddenly a couple of days he called me and asked me if i remember the accident and that he thinks now would be a good time for me to start paying back.
i didnt expect to ever hear from him again and i told him he cant come back to me after this long. he told me i could either start paying him back in installments now or he'll take my parents to court (because im still a minor)....
i need to know what he can legally do> does he really have something to take me to court for? can he hold my parents responsible? can he even bring this up in court without it working against him because i was only 14 and he shouldn't have let me drive? as a minor (then and now) am I still legally resposible? can he get in trouble for endangering a minor and letting a 14 yr old drive????
i really dont know the legal system .....please give me answers to everything i asked and any other advise that can help me.....thank you all very much!

did you have a driving license at that time?

With friends like that who needs enemy's.

You need to talk to your parents right now.

ok....i was only 14 so i didnt have a license or a permit and i know u may not agree with me but i really cant talk to my parents about it....i need real legal advise before i get them invoved...Does anyone have REAL answers

Well he certainly can sue you but it is unlikely that he will follow through with this threat. He will have to have some proof and it sounds like that will be hard to come by. Plus he will have to explain why he was letting you drive and why no police reports were filed. If he continues to harass you then you need to tell your parents.

Basically yes, if you cause damage you are responsible for it, if a minor without a license causes an accident, he is responsible for the damage. But permitting a minor without a license to drive is at least contributory negligence, so this guy would have some problems asserting his claims in court. He probably even committed a crime doing this. So i also doubt if he ever would go to court. It might even be that your parents can take him to court.

In real life things like these get settled. You did something wrong, he did something wrong. You should somehow agree on a fair share for everyone.
