Earlier this week my girlfriend gave my dog away to a guy i dont know but i found his number and address online. I went to his house a couple of days later and very poiltely told him my girlfriend made a mistake and i would like my dog back. The guy threatened to kill me, told me to leave his property, and i wasn't getting my dog back. I kept my cool and left. I thought i would just let the police handle it. Well needless to say the police in my town told me there was nothing they could do because he wasn't technically stolen. He did mention however filing a civil suit and said no more. If there is a way i can get my dog back what would be my first step about going about it? Any help would be very appriciated.

You might have to go to small claims court and sue the girlfriend since she is the one who gave away your (alleged) property. It might also be possible that she could be charged with embezzlement if you can show that you clearly and solely owned the dog and that she gave away the dog without your permission. However, if there is some dispute over ownership, then a civil court will have to decide the matter.

As difficult as it might be to think of it in this way, the dog is considered to be little more than property under the law. If you think of it as being a stereo or some such item, then you can more properly assess the legal situation.
