Assault & Battery I need to find court case records

I am going to be in a custody battle with my ex. I need to find old court records for an assault conviction in California. I don't have the case number nor do I know the county or city. Basically all I know is his name, that it was for assault, and that he served 3 months. All I can find are websites that charge a fee to give me the information. I called the Office of the Clerk, and the lady told me I need to figure out where in California it took place or they can't help.

Unfortunately, California state criminal history records are confidential ... even though court records of those conviction are not (at least not for 7 years).

Your best bet would be to pay for one of those on-line backgrounds then use that information to help you focus a request with a particular court.
