I stole $44 in product's a few weeks ago now I have court today and on the summons it says the police vs me.. Not kmart. I got a ticket that night with nonfine or court date... But I ignored the civil demand letter. What will happen? My charge is retail theft ... First time for anything

Ignoring a demand letter can be risky.
Many people pay the demand, or negotiate a lesser amount by speaking with the issuer of the demand.
Some people take their chances and ignore the demand.
You won't be charged criminally, AGAIN, for ignoring the demand.
You could be HOUNDED by collectors for ignoring, or sued in court if you got lots of money.

As far as court, just show up and plead not guilty.

Don't miss that court date, or your troubles will get worse.

The court will explain what happens next.

If possible, ask if you qualify for a taxpayer funded public defender.

You're in Chicago, or Cook County, IL.
So, this process will takeaway few months to conclude.
In all likelihood, you'll get a PUBLIC DEFENDER, if you ask.

Don't ADMIT or CONFESS, or discuss the case.
Simply look sad, maybe CRY, and beg for a lawyer.
This charge could DESTROY your life.
Don't just plead guilty.
WAIT, and never do this again.

You might want to reconsider not paying the civil demand. There "could be" consequences if you don't pay. Some people discuss whether they should pay the civil demand with his/her lawyer.
