i want my rent back and deposit

I live in Sioux City Iowa and i wanted to rent an apt. I gave them a 75 deposit after they approved my application to hold it til oct 1st.. I called Oct first and they kept saying they had to clean apt and do maintance jobs.. They finally called me the 9th to pay rent and get key. I paid the 480 rent and got a receipt then because they said they prorate the 2nd month which was stated in the least. I didnt sign a least then but later relize later the least was on the back of the application that i did sign already before i even got approved ... I go there last night to put stuff in apt and turn on lights and there are over 20 cockroaches in living room and kitchen area.. So i dont move anything in call them this morn about.. He acted surprised and said he would have someone put traps in there and bomb.. I told him i just want my rent money back and he says i signed a contract i will not get it back. I said then i will get a lawyer Monday and the city inspector.. He just says call Monday there and talk to owners.. MY QUESTION IS CAN I GET MY RENT MONEY BACK AND NOT EVEN MOVE IN THERE ??? tHANKS Janelle Carver

It appeared that you did sign a lease and you've contacted the landlord about an issue that he appears to be responding to.

If the city inspector comes in they will suggest that the unit be treated for the roaches..which the landlord has already said he will do.
