I was served with court papers even though I have paid my rent on time. What do I do?

My jurisdiction is: Illinois

The court summons says they want two months rent (for December and January). I paid both on time, one with a money order (I have the receipt) and one with a cashier's check (of which I can get a trace). I called my landlord and he said he just wants me to sign paperwork that says I will pay my rent on time. I have paid every month on time, except for the first move in during the month of October where my check bounced. I paid him 4 days later with a cashiers check. That was my only bad. He has a language barrier and I do not believe he has liked me from the beginning. Even the landlord said he has the receipts for all of the rent paid, he said his lawyer just wants us to go to court and sign papers. He said we won't even see a judge and I do not have to pay anything. Is it just me, or is this absolutely crazy? The landlord said he is just protecting himself. What rights do I have?!

Attend the court hearing with your receipts so you can prove to whomever oversees the particular court you will be attending that you do not owe for December and January.

If you are unsure what the purpose of this hearing is for, contact the number that should be listed on the summons to get more information. Some states hold Housing Court, some go through mediation.

Do not fail to attend the hearing so you can present your side of this issue. If you don't the landlord automatically "wins" by default.
