Because I became one today (yes, accidental, it's true, it can happen).
I went to the big box grocery store to pick up a few things. As I passed the greeting cards I remembered my daughter's birthday was coming up so I got her a card ($3.42) and put it down flat in the upper portion of my cart.
I did my shopping putting 4 of one item and 3 of another item in the upper part and multiples of other items in the lower part of the cart. When I went to pay I gave the cashier one of each and gave her the count of how many I bought, returning the individual items to the cart after paying.
I don't usually bag anything at that store because I keep cartons in my trunk for groceries and then take the loaded cartons into the house.
I went out to the car and started transferring the items into the cartons and when I was finished I started to roll the cart toward the cart repository area in the parking lot and noticed (to my horror) the birthday card sitting there where I had forgotten about it.
I brought it back in the store, paid for it at the self check-out register, got my receipt and went back to the car.
So, I will be sympathetic to accidental shoplifters in the future because I am living proof that it is possible.
