This is my first time getting caught and now that i have i will never do this again. Not just because i got caught and are now in trouble, but because now that i got caught, it made me want to research the effects that shoplifting does to honest people, which i had no idea about before i got caught. For this, i would like to apologize to all of you honest people out there. But my real question is, if i got caught shoplifting for the first time ever, and i know that i have shoplifted at that store before, can the the retail store look at past footage to see if i have ever stole from them before, and if they can, will they bring it up in court, or are they only allowed to prosecute me for the original charges? And IF THEY DO BRING UP THAT EVIDENCE, CAN THEY USE THAT AGAINST ME TO WORSEN MY PUNISHMENT? IS SOMETHING LIKE THEM EVEN SHOWING UP TO MY COURT DATE EVEN LIKELY? And also, are the store managers likely to show up at the court hearing, or is it so petty that they dont really care because it happens to them often?

Can they research past footage if available? Yes they can. However relax because in order to that they would have to sit through hours upon hours of footage. Its very very very VERY unlikely they have the time to do that in the hopes they will find footage that "proves" additional thefts

thanks. that makes me feel better because i have definately learned my lesson and wont do this again. But do you think someone representing the store will be there? Other than of course the district attorney.

ok. And do you think you could explain to me a little about the court process. like when you go to the courthouse, do i go straight to the judge, he reads my case really fast, then asks what i plead? Or do i sit and make a deal with the prosecuter? and if i do, does the prosecuter tell the judge how they have agreed to punish me as long as i plead guilty and the judge litsens or what? I have never been to court before so i have no idea.

Do NOT deal to DA on your own. Your best option is to go to court when Judge asks you how you plead request a public defender or have your own Attorney present

Re: If you are caught shoplifting but you have done in that

ok. so its okay when they say, "how do you plead?", to just say, "I would like to have a public defender"? I thought you were supposed to ask for one before you even saw the judge.

Re: If you are caught shoplifting but you have done in that

You have three options

Option 1. Plead guilty (not recommended)

Option 2. Plead Not guilty and request Public Defender

Option 3. Stand mute (refuse to plea) and request Public Defender
