I am 21 and I made a stupid decision to shoplift at a department store. I'm currently banned from the store. They called the police. The police gave me a Summons document and said that I have to head to court in a couple of weeks. This is the first time I have ever gotten in trouble with the law. I don't know what to do when I head to court or what to do before then.

Should I plead guilty and take whatever charge the judge gives me? The store already has a video tape of me stealing so pleading not guilt isn't an option, is it? Or should I hire an attourney( lawyer) beforehand and go from there?

What will happen to me? I am applying to graduate school and I can't have it on permanent record or it will jeopordize my future. What will probably happen to me?

I hope you guys can help me out. I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks.

Yes you need a Lawyer walking in and pleading guilty is a crap shoot. By the way what state was this in? It matters as laws vary

This is in New Hampshire.

Can I request a Diversion even if I plead guilty? Or would the lawyer have to interfere and request that for me?

You don't listen well do you? You do not want to do this on your own! Get a Lawyer and yes ask about Diversion. Do not just walk in and plead guilty have your Lawyer talk to DA about Diversion if available

Yes, I know. I'm just worried about getting a lawyer because I don't have the money for one. They cost like $200/hr don't they? And usually how many hours do they commit to helping you? It could add up like crazy.

How does a public defender work? How much would one cost?

I am going to explain so take notes

Court date:
Plead "not guilty" and ask for Public Defender. Judge will instruct you from there

Thanks a lot for your advice.

Will my options/the consequences be announced that given day if I ask for a Public Defender? How long will the whole entire process take and how expensive are Public Defenders?

The Public Defender can explain process and options as he knows the court best. The fee for Public Defender (if any) varies.
