Impound or Harassment???

Yesterday my car was impounded because my roommate was driving it with on a suspended license. I was not in the car with her at the time nor are the plates on the car in my name. Actually I received a bank loan for the car which I am still paying off and 90-day temp plates until I registered the vehicle but I never registered the car. However the title is in my name so how do I get my car back before the 30-days?

I guess what does not sit well with me is the fact that I am always seeing this cop that cited us, he constantly drives past the house ever since he responded to a DV complaint at our house two months ago. And the fact that my roommate was already parked in the driveway when the officer decided to cite her, and then officially impound "my" car. The officer said that he knew her license was suspended since he responded to a domestic violence complaint at the house months prior. What should I do I believe the Officer impounding my car was no accident? Yesterday I tried to file a harassment complaint against him but I guess it seemed way to convenient, his supervisor responded and vouched for the Officer's reasons for driving around the neighborhood so often... car theft supposedly but I honestly I believe he is harassing us... Help I need my car for work asap.

Since your car docs are in order then you can go get it. Hold proof of purchase and title………..You should be able to negotiate yourself to get your car which your friend was using. But you would still have to pay whatever fees are required. Once the dealers sell you the car, they take internal actions to make it yours. So even if there are temporal plates it is already in your name in the system. It is surprising you have temporal tags yet you already have a title………Just be nice and talk to them.

It depends on the laws in your state. In California, you would have the right to an impound hearing and could ask for the early release of the vehicle from the impounding agency. But, unless you had no idea his license was suspended and you also had made some reasonable inquiry about his license status, don't expect them to release it. It will be hard to argue that you live with a girl and did not know her license was suspended.

What state was this in?
