Say someone gifts me a car. It is registered in my name, my insurance etc. If I am at fault in an accident, can anyone go after the person who gave me the car? This is in California. Thank you...

Anyone can try to sue anybody for anything ... going "after" someone is not as hard as succeeding.

On the face of it I cannot see where there would be any legal basis to hold the seller liable, but I can hypothesize some circumstance where there MIGHT be a legitimate claim.

In short, it would be highly unlikely to make a viable claim against a seller of a vehicle whose name appears no where on the title or registration.
