I was driving through Northern Indiana on my way to Michigan from Illinois where I reside, when I was pulled over and given a ticket for going 85 on a posted 55 Highway (Same highway, in Illinois is 65, and 6 miles from where I was pulled over, in Michigan, is 70)
I was going at the rate of cars in the left lane, I just happened to be the one in the back, and the one that got caught. I accepted to the officer that I was speeding, but I contested to the officer that I was not going 85 perharps 80, but not more. Still, he wrote me up for 85, so 30 over the posted speed limit.

I have a clean record, and I called to the traffic department to get on the "Safe Driver Option" to pay my $150 fine, but avoid getting the points in my license. They told me that since my ticket was for going over 25 mph, I did not apply for that program.

Is it worth it to fight the ticket by accepting that I was speeding, but not going 30 over? Is it worth the lawyer expense? I asked my Car insurance what impact this would have on my insurance, and they told me that the license points is just one factor, and given the good standing on my credit history and the rest of the policies I carry with them, that it would not be an impact.

Please advise, is it worth the hassle and expense, or am I better off just paying the fine and be done with it? Thks.

It sounds to me like you need to hire a lawyer to see if you can get a better deal.

It's almost always better to contest the ticket to get a reduction. Check with the IL DMV and be sure you understand the consequences when a conviction is reported back. Also check to see what you insurance increase will be.

As Sr. Judge indicated, an attorney has the best chances to minimize the damage and is usually a good investment
