Hello,
Yesterday I was caught shoplifting in Ontario, Canada. The LPO took me into the back room and had me empty out everything from my pockets. He then had me sign some forms saying that I cannot enter the store for three years and that he had read me my "rights." He took down my information. He was extremely rude and intimidating to me. He did a couple of things that made it seem like he was trying to psych me out. (For example: he violently padded me down and pushed me back down on the chair, he also made a "call to the police" but it lasted around 1.5 seconds and all he said was "what's your badge number?" To me, it didn't seem legitimate.
He then had me take off my shoes, saying that they could've been stolen. I convinced them that they weren't. I was wearing a satchel type bag and he emptied it out in front of me. He took everything from it and said that everything could've been stolen. (I had probably 500 worth of things in there including things from the body shop, etc. All belonging to me.) I had prescription medication which I had to verbally fight him to keep. The rest he kept. At no point during the confrontation did I ever show resistance.
He then said that he was freeing me to go, but I couldn't enter the store for the next three years. He said that he would send me a letter and the police would call me in two weeks.
My questions are:
1) Since the police didn't actually come to the store, and his phone conversation did not seem real; do the police really call two weeks after the event? Or was this a method to intimidate me?
2) The store will send me a letter with a fine, and I will pay it. But will the store pursue criminal charges after I pay them?
3) If the police do call and I have to go to court. What are the chances of getting into the diversion program? I cannot have a record as the school will kick me out if I do.
Thank you for reading this and any advice will be helpful.
