Hi...
I am a teacher who was supposed to attend a professional development day for my school. However, I got tied up in traffic and did not make it. I called the person who works under my schools management company and attends the professional development to inform her that I did not make it due to the traffic (I thought this was the right thing to do). I was told by my supervisor that I would have a day's pay deducted from my paycheck due to my "insubordinate" actions and failure to report that I missed the training... although I was never informed of who I should call in the event that this happened.

What should I do? Now I know I should have told my boss the day I missed the training. My supervisor expects me to sign the letter she sent to me. This is my first disciplinary issue on this job and no verbal warning was given, just a lot of yelling at me and I didn't get a chance to explain my take on the situation.

I don't see that you have much choice. If you did not attend for whatever reason, they do not have to pay you for it. Signing the letter does not mean that you agree that you were insubordinate; it means that you have been advised of management's view on the matter. You don't have to sign but you can be fired for not signing it unless you have a bona fide, legally binding contract or CBA that specifically says otherwise.

Seems to me nothing illegal has occured. If you did not attend training then you should not get paid regardless of the reason.
