Hello,
Might be a long read, but all the details must be posted to make sure I am safe from any harm. A year ago, a person, we will call him bob, and I decided to work together and start an internet gaming server. It took months of coding and we both agree that we each did 50% of the work. I'd also like to note that he is 16 years old... Please keep this in mind.
We made plenty of money and of course NOTHING was written down on paper. All of the money made was sent to his paypal account which he directly paid to my bank account.
After a year, I became tired of his attitude and left the group. I reciently decided I wanted to put the software to the public, giving it for anyone to use and have fun with it. Before I do this though, I asked him to pay me my last payment, but he didn't want to. I understand this was not on paper and I potentially lost thousands of dollars, but that is alright. I personally want to give out the source to the public for moral and personal reason.
I mentioned this fact to him and asked him if this would be any threat, kind of wording it in a way that he should be paying me. He said "yes it would be a threat and he said it would be blackmail, but then I would post your SSN to the public." I didn't know it was blackmail and realized it afterwards, but then he threatened me at the same time.
This is a double blackmale I'm guessing so my accidental blackmale, which I didn't know I was doing at the time - more pure anger, would be safe by his black male for my SSN?
Also all of this was in a voice chat room, non recorded with three people, one witness on his favor.
We both put equal work on it and there is no proof that someone owns it, never signed any contracts. He did not receive my w-9 until a few days ago, and never paid me after receiving my w-9. It might look like I was working for him, but it is not true. Because it was a 50/50 deal and we've been splitting cash for a year now not under a w-9. (I claimed taxes as a hobby)
I also know for a fact that I own the oldest piece of the source, proving that I was the original creator.
The true question is, Can I get in trouble for posting my software that we worked on in the last 15 months to the public?
Are any of my actions that I did make my liable if I post this software?
Thanks in advance,
~Joseph Cooper
