Is this defamation of character?

I am a stepmother of two growing teenagers. I have had them in my life for about six years. Their mother has come back into their lives and is now making my life a living hell. She has done so many things toward my husband and I due to her bitterness. She had the kids write false statement that I abuse them. We are always the last to find out what going on. Out of the blue we have had social workers pop up to our home to interview the kids. They find no finding of harm. My problem is the mother keep filing false reports. Is this defamation of character? What rights do I have? I work with children for a living I'm afraid she will cause me to lose my job and all of this is on public records. I'm stressed and blood pressure is high over this matter.

I suggest you speak with a lawyer.
I also submit to you for your consideration that you aren't required to speak with social services.
If they return, you can simply say, "Pursuant to advice from our attorney, we respectfully assert our right to remain silent, and have nothing further to say about this."
Before you take that step, discuss it with your attorney.

I would add that you could inform the kids of the same... They are not required to speak to anyone, even police, and should never do so outside your presence- ever.
