Issues: Collection Debt Paid by Separate Party

I paid a debt on behalf of someone over the phone. I indicated that I would pay over the phone so long as a document was e-mailed to me the next day stating that the debt was paid off. The money was withdrawn from my account the next day, yet I have not received an e-mail or any confirmation of the payment for about 4 days. Are there any regulations that prohibit this? Can I request to have my account credited and send in a check so that I may have my own proof? I live Virginia.
