It is totally predictable that the Jan. 6 defendants would hope for a pardon or for clemency when Trump takes office. However, while it's the president's pergoative to do it, I think Trump will be at least smart enough not to pardon those who invaded the capitol building damaging federal property and causing mayhem. Republicans are supposed to the be law and order party and pardoning those those who were convicted of property crimes and crimes of violence would undercut that long held position. It'd be a weapon the Democrats would use against the Republicans in the 2026 congressional elections. In short, there is nothing to gain politically from pardoning those who invaded the Capitol but there is a risk of losing some support if he issues those pardons.


Trump supporter or not, no one should excuse clearly criminal behavior.
