Jewelers liability

My jurisdiction is: California

I had the crown on my diamond ring replaced 6 months ago, because the prong was broken. On Friday I looked down at my ring and the whole crown diamond and all was gone. I retraced my steps and left my name and number at the lost and found of the two stores I was in. My question is the jewelry store liable. I have the receipt and I also have the paperwork and appraisal of my ring from when it was purchases.

Did you get any kind of warranty on the work from the store?

No warranty.

Then the store will only be liable if you can show they did the repair negligently. After 6 months, that'll be tough to prove. There would have been wear and tear on the ring, you might have banged it, etc. You might take it to another jeweller to see what they think of what's left of the repair job.
