I have a pending Class A misdemeanor charge for theft (under $50). I haven't been convicted, but it shows up as pending on background checks. My lawyer thinks I'm going to qualify for deferred prosecution, since this is my first offense and have no record. This was incredibly stupid, and I understand that will never do it again. My question is, will the charges show as pending for a year (if I do get the deferred prosecution) or when are they dropped? Also, does that affect job chances? Can it be expunged?
Thank you

It will likely show on your record for quite awhile. Be honest on your applications. If you try to hide it or minimize it you have no chance. Be honest and humble and you might get a job.

This is par for the course, OP.
The dirty little secret they refuse to reveal, is that any diversionary program will only lessen the criminal penalty they can impose.

Only a full executive pardon, in your situation, from the governors of your fine state will remove the stain that will always smear your fine name.

They don't forgive these days, they keep piling on.
Imagine a person doing five years in prison, paying the debt they said he or she owed society.
Out he or she comes, a changed person, ready to become a productive citizen.
In most cases, he or she can never vote, own a firearm, get a decent job, even go to some colleges, obtain most state licenses, run for elected office. Etc...
Is it any wonder many of those people commit more crimes?

That little mistake is going to be the bane of your existence for decades, if not forever.
