I moved from Chicago to the Los Angeles area in April 2001. Just before moving, I got rid of a car I owned; signed the title over to the new owner, expecting she would have applied for new title and registration.

I recently received a letter from a law office with a judgement from the Circuit Court of Cook County in the amount of $3680.00 for tickets received on the vehicle for "no city sticker." These are dated between 10/2/03 and 5/31/04.

Am I liable for these tickets? What is the worst that can happen? Can they garnish my wages? Will it affect my credit score? Will my CA licence get suspended? HELP!!!!

Good question. I'm not quite sure. I hope that you have proof of the sale, but I think the problem is that if you sell a car you are responsible to notify the department of motor vehicles in state where your car is registered of such sale. I would contact the DMV and see what can be worked out.
