I work for sams club in virginia for the last three months ive been cutting meat under the impression that i would be given my pay raise quickly after some red tape had been cut through. how ever i realised this was just a ruse to get me to train the new meat cutters and after one that had been on medical leave came back (he cut his thumb off) i was told that my raise had been denied and that i would be made a meat cutter when a new position opend up i just wanna know if i have to just eat this loss a meatcutter is a paygrade 6 (12.50-15.00) (13.11 for me )an hour im a meat wrapper paygrade 2 (8.00) an hour i would of never done this had i known that they werent gonna give me the apropriate pay rate to boot i found out they new from the start i wasent gonna get the raise and yet lied to me and wouldent allow me to speak to the HR person about it. that was their job they have also punished me for refusing to stay after my shift and that was the reason that i didnt get the raise so do i have any leagle recourse?
 thank you for your time and knowledge

The law does not care what your company's pay grades are. As far as the law is concerned, if you are making the higher of state or federal minimum wage and being paid overtime when you work over 40 hours a week, the employer is legal.

The ONLY time an employer is required to give you a raise, unless you have a bona fide contract or CBA that specifically says otherwise, is if minimum wage is raised by the appropriate legislative body and you are earning under the new minimum.

If you feel that the company offered you a binding promise of pay raise you will have to discuss it with an attorney in your state.
