I was caught shoplifting a few days ago. I would like to know anything that may happen in the future. I'm fifteen, and I stole a $10 set of earrings. I know my parents are going to have to pay around a $300 fine, and I have to go to court when a letter comes. What's the deal with probation? When can I get my record expunged or sealed? Can I say 'no' when colleges ask for a record? Anything else I should know? I live in Nebraska.
I have no attorny or anything yet, I'm just awaiting the court summoning. They said it may take a month or two to arrive. The officer said that the teen court was more for rehabilitation and not for punishment (or something like that) and I shouldn't get too much damage. Should I do anything while I wait?

It would be unwise to pursue this legal action without an Attorney. If you can afford one great if not request public defender. When you meet with this Attorney ask about Diversion or a similar program that ends with no record.

I also wanted to get into a medical academy next year, will this darken my chances? Does the police notify my school, or will they check into it?
And how soon can I erase my record after court?

Those are questions for your Attorney. However my understanding of Diversion is that once you complete program (takes 6 months to a year) your case is dimissed. This means no criminal record
