Criminal Records, Expungement keep it off my record

I was caught attempting to shoplift $100 worth of merchandise from Macys in New York. I paid them $500 and now I have to go to court. I'm 44 yrs old, never been arrested, upstanding member of community. Is there any way to keep it off my record? Avoid court?
