My mother inlaw's son rented a trailer in Arkansas and my mother inlaw lives in Iowa. Her son became gravely ill and my mother inlaw went to Arkansas to be with her son. He was in the hospital and she stayed at the trailer he was renting. She was there for a couple of months. The rent was taken out eletronically every month around the first. The bank statements that we have show that it has never been eletronically transfered any later than the 3rd. While her son was in the hospital someone stole his check book and was writing fraudulant checks (which is under investigation.) So, his mother had to close that account and open a new account, she had a power of attoney for him. This was done around the middle of the month. Which would have meant that the rent should have been taken out already. The landlord said that she had not recieved it and that she needed a check. My mother inlaw wrote her a check for the rent. Her son passed away and my mother inlaw spent the next month packing his things up to bring them back to Iowa. The landlord wasn't very happy that she was doing this. The landlord thought that she was entitled all of his belongings. A few months later the landlord said that the check had bounced and that she would need another one. My mother inlaw sent her another check and then thought that maybe she should ask to see a copy of the NSF check. So, she put a stop payment on the check and told the landlord that she would need a copy of the NSF check. When my mother inlaw recieved a copy of the check it doesn't even look like it has been to the bank. It's not stamped NSF and on the other checks that we have recieved from the bank it shows the back and the front this one just shows the front. I should add that my mother inlaw is 83 years old and that is is on Social Security. This landlord said that she is going to take the NSF and the check that my mother inlaw had a stop payment on to an attorney.
My question is, is she responsible for the rent even though she wasn't the one renting the trailer?
