We found out in Feb. that the landlord was behind in his payments and his mortgage company was calling us looking for him, we talked to him about it and he said he would take care of it,and not to worry he'd never do that to us. Now the lawyer is calling and told us if they don't hear from him they will start foreclosure proccedure.we have been calling him and leaving messages and he won't return any calls.we do not have a lease, do we have to pay him rent,as we have to save money now to rent another house

Yes; until the house goes into actual foreclosure you need to continue paying your rent. Failure to do so can result in your being evicted and then sued for this owed rent.

If you are concerned about the foreclosure you can give your landlord 30 days written notice and then move. You indicated you do not have a lease; therefore, you are considered to have a month to month tenancy (i.e., your lease runs from the first day of each month to the last) and in most states this type of lease can be terminated with a 30 day written notice to the landlord. Keep a copy of this notice for your records.
