I was recently evicted from a room I was renting in a house in New Jersey. There was no lease signed, everything was verbal. I owe the woman I was renting from past rent, $1,445.00 to be exact. She is holding all my possessions, and says she will sell will sell them to an auction house if I don't come up with the money. I'm unemployed, with no source of income, and thus far I've come up with $600. She won't accept this, saying she wants everything in one lump sum,and has contacted auction houses to come by and get the stuff. I've been told that this is illegal, and that should she do this I've every legal right to sue. Is this true? Also, she's not the type to take a lawsuit seriously; if I should sue and win, and if she refuses to pay, can I garnish her wages?

There is a bit of confusion in your posting.

When you say you were evicted, was this a court ordered eviction or simply a notice from the landlord to "pay or quit"?
