My jurisdiction is: Michigan

My lease isn't up until October, but my landlord called me today and informed me that he shortened my lease. He said that I either have to sign a new 1 year lease or move out. I have never had any complaints or caused any problems where I reside, and I have always been on time with every rent payment. Is this legal? What are my options??

No; this is not legal. Your current lease is a legally binding contract between you and the landlord and as long as you are complying with this, he cannot modify this without your consent.

He also cannot force you to "move out" in the sense that he can evict you. Only a court can order an eviction and in order to do so, he would need to file for such, a hearing be set up and a judge would decide whether this can be approved. Again; if you have broken no rules on the lease, the judge will not rule in the landlords favor.

Your options are to refuse what your landlord wants and remind him that you two have a contract that is legally binding for both sides.

I hope this helps..
