We have a oral tenancy to rent a house for 6 months. After only 6 weeks the landlord sells the house. On July 31st told us that we have to be out in 21 days so the new owners can move in. I am very upset. This is not enough time to find suitable living arrangements for my family including a 2 yr. old. What are my legal rights? Thanks

What state are you living in?

Without a written lease, a tenant is assumed to be a month to month renter. In many states only a 30 day notice is required by the landlord for the tenancy to end. In some states this is 60 days.

In Indiana the amount of notice a landlord (or a tenant for that matter) must give in terms of vacating the property is based on how they pay. If you pay weekly, only a weeks notice is required. If you pay monthly, it's a months notice. So legally you have one more week than the owners originally told you to find a new place.
