landlord threw out items

I lived in my Davenport Iowa apartment for a year and a half. I gave over a months notice that I was leaving and 2 weeks later they cleared everything out of the garage I was renting. They said that they put a letter on the garage to to claim that I was renting it but I never got it. they said since I didn't respond to the note they won't remberse me for the items. They also will not return my pet deposit. They are new owners and they are saying it is not their policy to return it. My lease says there is a $100 pet deposit and a $25 a month pet rent that is not refundable. I pait $200 for a pet deposit doesn't this mean I should get it back? There was no damage to the apartment and the sent a check for the whole security deposit but it wasn't signed.

Send the check back requesting that they sign it and take the opportunity to ask for the refundable pet deposit fee if that is what your lease agreement states.
