back in 2000 me and my sister rented a small property and signed a short-term six month lease. we always paid our rent on time every month. during the six month we had no problems what so ever with my landlord as he was one of my old school teachers!, we never heard from them once the six months was up and kept on paying rent into there bank account. i had heard a rumour the my landlord has properties abroad and spent a lot of his time in spain on bussiness, about 7 months later i lost my job and could not afford to pay the rent. i tried sevral times to contact him but no responce..,my sister decided to move in with her friend because the condition of the house with getting bad and she was getting bothered with her breathing because all the walls in her bedroom were getting mouldy and damp, (the house is about 100 years old).

so she left me in the rented property.i thought to myself i will stay here without paying rent until my landlord realises and comes to see me, unfortunatley that wasent until 2005! when one day he came knocking on the door and said that i owe him £5000 in rent arrears, i was quite shocked and he came in, i began explaining what had happend. he had been drinking and tried to take the keys off me and told me to leave. Things got out of control and i told him he was not getting a penny from me because i only signed a six- month lease, he then asked for the keys and told me he would be back at 9;00am the next day to evict me!?, i had it on good authority that this would be an illegal eviction regardless of a lease or not. obviosly i never slept well that nite and decided that the best thing to do would be a moonlight -flit. so i took everything i owned and moved it into my mates houses all through the night. i saw him from my mates house at 9 am he just posted a letter. i still had keys and went in at night to get my mail then locked up. the letter my landlord posted states that i owe him in excess of £5000. i found some where else to stay now because the council says they cannot give me a house due to my debt. i have no intention of ever paying this money as i am not fully convinced that my landlord is actually due this for the following reasons: 1- it was only a six month lease which only my sister signed, 2- the way i was treated when he showed up and threatend my with an illegal eviction... please help me any genuine advice would be so helpful.

the other problem is that my sister is now pregnant and cannot get a house from the council because they claim that she has a £5000 debt (from the house we rented), i feel guilty being the older one and now her future housing situation is being affected she is going to be a single mother in may, surley something can be done?, who is in the wrong as this circumstance seems like one in a million??

Nobody from England follows this website. You are really going to have to check with an attorney by you.

Living in any sort of government housing you have strict rules to follow. She cannot just take off on a counsil lease, and you cannot expect to live rent free for that period of time.

It sounds like you were a month to month tenant but it seems to be you and your sister should consult with an attorney.
