I recently dismissed my lawyer after being repeatedly told that I didnt have a case worth any money and I should accept a modest settlement and consider myself fortunate if they offered anything at all. The retainer agreement stated that if I didn't accept a settlement offer against the wishes of my lawyer I would be financially on the hook for all fees and expenses. I didn't want to settle for a modest amount and I didn't want to be financially bullied into settling against my wishes so I dismissed my lawyer before any negotiations started other than the original demand.
I then went on alone to settle for a rather large amount. The mediator told me that my attourney could still file for a share of the settlement. What is the statute of limitations for an attourney to do this?
The lawyer also owes me money from a smaller earlier settlement with a different defendant in the same case. My share of the settlement isn't exactly showing up in a timely manner in my mail box. What is the statute of limitations for me to go after this?
