Lease problem

I had a car lease,about 10 months before ending I lost my job. I was late on payment a few times. They decided they would repossess, harassing people I know and live with. I called to straighten it out and they said if I can't guarantee how I'd pay the next time, they wanted the car, even though I was square with them. I turned it in. I don't need the harassment. My question is am I responsible for the balance, even though I was paid up in full? And since I haven't found work, I can't pay a dime. Plus a collector says he's gonna sue me? I haven't got a thing to my name accept a $200 junk car I'm trying to find a job with. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
