Legal Obligation

In short I need a bit of advice.

My girlfriend of 16yrs and I broke up, we lived and owned a home together in Virginia for the majority of that time.

My 2 questions are as follows:

She is still living in the house, I have moved out but am still paying half the mortgage. Both of our names are on the mortgage and we both legally own the house, so I fully expect that we will split the sale of the house, can I legally ask/force her to sell the house?

Outside of the house, what other financial obligations do I have to this woman? We both had separate bank/investment accounts, I made more money than she did for the majority of the relationship but she did well and has many investments. She feels I owe her something and I need to know is whether she has any legal right to take me to court for financial restitution of some kind. I have already given her $20K toward the mortgage and an additional $10K for bills etc. She says she wants more, what do I owe her?

Thank you for your time and any advice you can provide would be a godsend.

Sorry, forgot the most important part, we were not legally married in any state, including common law. Just girlfriend/boyfriend.

Hank.

If your state does not recognize commo0n law, then you do not owe her anything.

You are probably going to have to go to court to force her to sell the home if she won't do it willingly.

Stop listening to her. You are not married therefore you do not have to pay her anything.

Thanks so much for your reply, I do appreciate the advice.

I am a nice guy and I have gone out of my way to be amenable to her (emotions after 16yrs are difficult) but I just feel like I am getting screwed. I don't want to have to hire a lawyer if I can help it, but I think I may just have to.
