I was recently pulled over in Michigan for speeding, and the issuing officer told me that my license had been suspended from a 2004 citation (unsafe lane change) that I never responded to. I had no idea of the suspension, as I have been living in NYC for the past few years without a car and rarely driving. He gave me a ticket with a 65/55 speeding citation and a misdemeanor no operator's license. He told me if I got my status reinstated back in new york, wrote a letter explaining my case with copies of the updated information, the court might possibly throw out the case and I may not have to appear back in michigan.
I did as he said, pleaded guilty to both charges in the letter, and requested that my mandatory appearance be waived. I am currently awaiting a response, the court appearance is scheduled for next monday (10/22).
My question: I am pleading guilty, so is this worth going back to michigan for a court appearance, or for that matter hiring an attorney? Am I at risk for jail, major fines, or insurance damage by not going back or retaining legal representation?
