Lived in house I did not own

I was married for three years and lived with my wife, her three sons, her parents, and our daughter. We lived with her parents in a house owned by her parents. Since I moved in (three years ago), my wife and I paid $1400/month (1/2 of the monthly mortgage payment) from our checking account directly to the bank that held the mortgage. Her parent, who held the mortgage, paid the other half. I personally brought in about 65% of my wife's and my income. The names of my wife and I were placed on the deed about a year and a half ago. They were removed a few months ago, as my wife's parents instructed us to do so, because we had to be off the deed for them to refinance the house. We separated a month later.
I've put a lot of my hard earned money in to that house. I also sold a house I had owned when I was single, took the equity I made, and put $20,000 in to finishing the basement of the home.
Since separating, I have taken a small number of possessions with me (a couple chairs, a TV, etc) certainly, not enough to make it look like anyone just moved out of the house.
My question:
Given the fact that my name was not on the mortgage of a house that I put a lot of money in to, do I have any recourse as far as pursuing monetary compensation?

Thanks
Drew
