Loan to a Friend

At the end of April 2009, I loaned a friend money to fly home for a funeral. This friend I had met in college. While I had graduated when this happened, she was still in college (But I was still a poor graduate with hardly any money to spare). We verbally agreed that she would pay me back for the ticket and luggage (about $425), so I put it on my credit card for her.

Once back home, she called me and asked if I could help her cover her rent because her father was wiring money, but it would not be in Ohio in time to pay the rent without it being late. That was about $330. Unfortunately that money was never wired and she didn't bother to tell me that it wasn't wired until I asked after a few days of not receiving it. At the same time she asked me about the rent, she asked if I could cover her return ticket back. She said she had the money for the ticket (about $140) with her and would give it to me when she got back.

When my friend returned, she paid me $125 and then $300. The last payment was on May 19, 2009. Since then, I have had the hardest time trying to get in touch with her. It actually was about a month and a half before I got any communication from her. Two days ago she texted me saying she'd call, but she never did. I tried to call her tonight and of course, no answer. I heard via another friend that she is telling other people that she is upset with me. The balance she owes is still about $466. She's right now living about 90 minutes from me, but soon will possibly be moving to Arkansas.

Is it worth taking her to court to get my money back? Or should I just give up the fight?

Your best bet is to file suit as soon as possible since she is still within the jurisdiction of the court. You may also want to send her a demand letter as well at the same time. At the very worst, you win a default case and file a lien and make her life challenging and get your sense of satisfaction if not the money.
