My jurisdiction is: USA
I had a lease with an apartment and had 4 roommates. Due to military obligations, I had the right to terminate the lease. I got out of the contract, but agreed to pay with compensation I received from the military. I was released from active duty before the last month's rent was due. The roommates borrowed money from a mutual friend and expected me to pay it back. I agreed in the beginning, but now refuse to pay it back because the roommates stopped paying a utility bill that is under my name. Am I still responsible for paying the mutual friend back even though the lease wasn't in my name?
