I was wondering about a long term renting situation. I rented the same townhouse for 6+ years and moved recently to another location. My previous landlord is trying to keep most of, if not all of my security deposit for cleaning carpet and painting (& minor repairs). My question is: Does she have the right to completely charge me for painting and carpets due to the length of time that I was staying there? She did not do preventative maintenance for the entire time that I stayed there, no painting, no carpet cleaning... also, when I moved in 6 years ago, there was a different owner and they did not do any painting (that I could tell) before I moved in. What can I do to salvage atleast a part of my security deposit?
Also, NC state law states that a landlord must refund or give an itemized description of what the security deposit was used for and refund within 30 days of tenant vacating the property if there is a forwarding address available. I left my forwarding address and it is now over 30 days since I have moved out. Is that ground for requesting a full refund of my security deposit?
