At a national chain pet store, I dropped a bank envelope with cash inside (on video). When I realized it, I called the store manager, and asked if it was found. He said yes, he found the envelope with $1,000 (I realized later that there was $2,000 inside), but that someone had claimed it minutes earlier. He put me on hold, and then said something foul had occurred with the money. I returned to the store and called police. The cashiers said the money was found right where I stood when the manager checked me out. A cashier had actually found the envelope, she & another cashier turned it in to the manager. He went to the office to count the money, and told the two cashiers that there was $1,000 in the envelope. The cashier told the security employee what happened when he asked. About 15 minutes later, the manager was called to come outside where the security guard was talking to a black male (I am not black) in a car, who refused to come inside, but said he was there to pick up the envelope that the manager was holding for his mother and the manager gave him the envelope without i.d., name, signature, or identifying he bank name on the envelope or the contents. Can I get my money from the pet store since the manager was negligent in identifying the correct owner?

Very doubtful.

If you drop a wad of money in an unmarked envelope, you are lucky if you get it back at all. You can't hold others responsible for you losing the money.

In fact, it can be argued that there never WAS $2,000 in the envelope and that this is just a scheme to extort money out of the store. How do they know that the person who claimed it was not an accomplice of yours? heck! That would be a great way to collect a couple thousand dollars!

You can certainly try to take them to small claims court, but it will probably be a hard case to make.
