Hello... I've been working at a retail store for quite some time... Over the past couple of years I began stealing little things then progressed to large things. They had a hidden camera and knew what I've been doing for the past few months. Overall, I admitted to 7000 dollars worth of merchandise. How screwed am I? They pulled me into the back last night and I went down a list of everything that I can think of and admitted it to them. They didn't call the cops but after all was said and done they let me go. They said that tomorrow they will decide what to do as far as prosecution. I am 26 and this happened in Ohio. Am I likely to get a cop at my door or a note saying that i have to pay this amount? It happened in a retail pharmacy... I took some medication (I did not take any controlled substances) which I also admitted to. How does this complicate matters?

I signed the list of items that they wrote out... I signed a written statement saying that i did steal that amount. I think that is all I signed, there might have been one more paper but I can't think of it.

Thanks!

You need a Lawyer and now!!! You are looking at felony charges and prison time. Expect Police to come to your home, work etc to arrest you and take you to jail. You will then need to bail out or stay in jail until first court date. Get a Lawyer now to plan your defense and surrender

Agreed.

It is time for you to shut up, don't speak to anyone about this, and speak to an attorney. If you are REALLY lucky, they will ask only for repayment. However, that does NOT mean that you will not be prosecuted as well.

Hello again... status update...

I just received a civil settlement offer in the mail for 350 dollars... does that sound low?

It has been about a month since they confronted me.

I'm assuming that I can still be prosecuted criminally? Anyone know what these procedures are like or a time frame of how long these usually take?

Thanks...

That seems "very" low. They have until the statute of limitations runs out to file charges which for misdemeanor would be 1 to 2 years. However $7,000.00 makes this a felony which takes the statute of limitations even longer perhaps 10 years

Since courts are usually backed up, they might only be going for the $350 since they're charging you. Keep an eye out in your mail.

wow...i think u got lucky cz my friend who works for a retail store he didn't steal or anything just for a discount..he got fired and arrested...felony grand theft for JUST a small amount of $700...crazy  (CA state) anyways lesson learn here....i hope god will give u another chance and hopefully nobody arrest u...cz i know u deserved a second chance..godbless u...pls keep us updated..thanks

Where did you get he didnt steal? He gave (or sold) merchandise for less than its cost forcing the store (and the rest of us) to eat the remainder. By the way the threshold for felony theft in CA is $400.00 which is why it was a felony at $700.00
