My grandmother is going into a nursing home in about 3 months, she has been living in an assisted living facility and paying for it with her own money, even sold her house and belongings to pay for it, now she has no money left and needs to get on medicaid (ILLINOIS), here's my problem: about a 1 1/2 maybe 2 years ago my grandmother wrote me a $3,000 check to help my wife and I with some unexpected expenses, basically a gift,
now my sister who is in charge of my grandmother's finances is telling me once my grandmother goes on medicaid the state (ILLINOIS) is going to want the $3000 from me, I cannot find anything on any state website about this, all they talk about is putting a lein on the house, well there is no house it was sold after she gave me the money.
I need some feedback if anyone knows if the state can take money from me or not or if I have nothing to worry about.
