I appreciate that two non-legals answered. I really had high hopes that one of the legal experts would help. If this is just non-legals talking to non-legals than this is no better than the advice I followed. If I could have found a state agency to help, believe me I wouldn't be looking up free legal advice. I barely make enough for transit to school and back. I can't afford the doctors' bills. I am 20 and in need of a solid plan that won't leave me dropping out of school. Guess my thread isn't interesting enough.

Danielle - if you notice, not even Thelawprofessor's postings are considered legal advice. Read the disclaimer included with his signature. Moreover, you don't know if all the legal experts here are attorneys or not, but the MOST important thing here is, legal advice comes from your attorney not a forum.

Anyhow, what you want is a miracle and that won't happen. You have medical bills to pay due to being uninsured and a choice to make. That choice is either for you to stop school and pay the bills quickly or continue school and pay the bills for a very long time. No legal advice here will change that fact.

What can you do then? See if you can have family, friends, church help you with the bills and, if that is not an option, consult a credit counseling agency to see what they can do for you when it comes to negotiating with the hospital a payment plan (if your negotiating skills are failing and as mentioned on my previous posting). The last resource will be, if the bills are really extremely high and overwhelming you, is for you to consider bankruptcy which is an extreme option since it will create a black spot on your credit record for at least 10 years and potentially ruin your chances to get credit as well as become a deterrant when seeking employment.

Be proactive and see if your town's courthouse can refer you to pro-bono or contingency attorneys or see if the local bar association can help you with a referral as well.
