My cousin passed away last week at 43ys old. He was found dead at his doorstep the following morning. He had no estate, nothing of value, his dad is very elderly (86) has very little money, he and his wife were legally separated and filed for divorce. She received the divorce papers approx. 2-3 days after his death. They were separated for close to a year. Who is responsible for his medical bills? Is this a sinerio where the doctors/hospital would consider this as a legal write-off? I believe the ex-wife paid for the memorial service etc. but can't afford the medical bills. It is unclear as to if she is even responsible for them. She did not agree to be the one who pays as she had no imediate knowledge of the death.

Thank you for your help.

His estate is liable to pay the medical bills. No-one else is personally responsible for them. If his estate is destitute, his personal representative should notify the doctors and provide a copy of the death certificate. They'll most likely write it off.
