My relative was in a rehab hospital in Illinois. The patient had dnr marked on her original Healthcare poa, but cancelled it shortly after entering the hospital when she contracted an infection while under their care. She needed antibiotics, blood transfusions, and a heart monitor. At that time, The doctor told her and her agent, to cancell the dnr so they could provide those treatments, which they did.
Several weeks and several infections later,(while lying to her and to her Healthcare poa agent) (who is also her spouse), the hospital terminated antibiotic treatment and hydration against both of their wishes. The hospital also refused three requests by the agent to relocate the patient to another hospital for treatment. (also illegal) These things contributed to her death at age 60.
The patient had been estranged from her previous family for over seven years. She did not trust them and had very little contact with them. They contacted the hospital and insisted her care be discontinued against her wishes, as she was blind and they said she had "no quality of life". We believe they were somehow able to convince the hospital to go against her legal documentation.
The hospital insisted they did not terminate her care, so we hired a private autopsy. The autopsy results prove they lied and worse things that I won't reveal in this post. The patient would have "fully" recovered with proper care.
We retained an attorney, who took our money and did nothing except bill us for more. Other attorneys contacted have said, "these family matters can get ugly". The patient had legal documentation that was supposed to protect her from her previous family and malpractice, according to the law in the state of Illinois. In fact, Illinois law says the hospital is guilty of manslaughter. The problem is, finding an attorney that will enforce it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Tips for readers:
1.) Do not Resuscitate (DNR) orders are commonly being re-interpreted as, Do not treat.
If your legal documentation does not include a "Will to Live" (not to be confused with a "living will" or "advance directives"), you may want to update your documentation, especially If you are elderly or disabled.
2.) Learn about and fight for "patient rights to proper healthcare". If you wait until you become a patient, you have waited too long. Know your rights as a patient. Get involved.
3.) Learn about the laws and legislation in your area regarding euthanasia, assisted suicide, and healthcare and find out what your elected representative is voting for.
4.) Stop voting for politicians who have no respect for life. Our children, the elderly and the disabled are important to us. Vote for politicians who care more about the people they are supposed to represent than special interest groups and lavish lifestyles for themselves. Politicians have the Best healthcare plans and the very best retirement plans, courtesy of the American taxpayer. How does yours compare? There is power in numbers at the voting booth. Get involved.
Every life is important. You may not think so now, but if you, your Mother, Father, you or a loved one were hurt in an accident tomorrow, you might change your mind. Proper Medical care should be available to everyone, not just the rich and famous.
5.) Fight to save the social security system. The elderly have paid their dues. They paid into Social Security for years and they should not be denied the benefits they were promised, just because it is being handed out to people that did Not earn it. When the elderly have to choose between medical care and food or a roof over their head, in the United States of America...something is very wrong. If the people, government, churches, etc choose to send financial aid to other countries Before taking care of our own vulnerable population, something is very wrong. When our neighbor goes hungry while we eat, something is very wrong. When elderly die and it is blamed on the excessive heat, something is very wrong. Where were the neighbors, Where was the government help, Where are the churches?
We, the people are allowing these things to happen, in our neighborhoods..while living comfortable lives, ourselves. Something is very very wrong.
Get involved.
