Missing ring

A friend of mine recently got her nails done at a salon. She gets them done semi-regularly. She has a ring that she has been wearing everyday for basically the past 3 years. Never takes it off, not even to shower.

Got her nails done one day at a new place & the employee asked her to please remove her ring (they were rubbing her hands with lotion or wax or something). She took it off and laid it on the table & afterwards, they allowed her to go wash her hands. When she walked back, the employee said "All done" & without thinking about it, she grabbed her purse, paid, and left.

She called back two days later to tell them about how she left her ring & they keep telling her there is no ring there and they have "asked around". She went in the salon & they pretty much just brushed her off and said there was nothing they could do and no one has seen it.

Is there something she can do about this? The ring meant a lot to her.

Unfortunately she has no proof, just her allegation that she laid her ring on a counter unattended.

Had she placed the ring in her pocket or purse, she'd have it today.

If she had received a receipt for safekeeping from the shop, an extraordinary bailment would have been created requiring the shop to exercise extreme care in protecting the ring.

Unfortunately, she didn't do any of those things.

She must eat the loss.

The salon is not responsible for your friend forgetting about her ring. You have no idea what happened to it as it could have been thrown away accidentally or another patron could have picked it up. It might even still be there after having been stuck in a drawer or something. If the ring was that valuable, it should have been placed in a pocket or purse where it couldn't be damaged or lost.

Agree with the others.

If the ring has any monetary value it might be covered under her homeowners or renters insurance. No guarantees but she should check her policy if she has one.

She can also report it to the police (she would likely have to for an insurance claim).

If she has photos of the ring she can circulate them to pawn shops and see if it turns up.

Otherwise, she must suffer the consequences of her lapse of judgment.
