Multi-County Judgements

I have a 4 year old son with an ex I was never married to here in Iowa. After I got married to my wife, we decided to fight for custody of him because we felt his mother was very unstable and at times negligent. We filed in Polk county where she was living with a boyfriend at the time for custody and child support adjustments. I chose to represent myself and have a lawer file my paperwork as it was cheaper. By the time the case started, my ex had moved several more times and ended up here in Humboldt county where my wife and I live. My ex and I settled on complete split custody since she was now living in the same school district and that judgement was made in Polk county. Even though I had the paperwork to adjust the child support after we settled, the judge decided not to alter it as it was already established in another county (my ex and I had it established in Hamilton county when we were living there). The judge wrote in the paperwork that Hamilton county would have to adjust the child support.
So I file the paperwork with the Child Support Recovery Unit to get my child support fixed. After waiting over six months I finally got a trial date. When I got to the courthouse, I was pulled into an office by a social worker. She pretty much told me that the judgement made in Polk county about our custody would not affect our child support order in Hamilton county and that the judge should have made the adustments after he finished our custody papers. So I'm have half custody, making less money due to less hours at work and still have to pay the full amount of child suppot. She told me about the only thing I could do is file for child support against my ex or hire a lawyer to get the custody and child support files together. My ex chooses not to work anymore for some reason or another so it would be pointless to try to get any child support from her. Plus that would create another file in Humboldt county. (Like we need anymore) To get to the end of my huge story my question is...is there anyway I can get the files put together with out having to pay a lawyer?
