I am a greencard holder going for citizenship in a couple of years. I have cc debt from the UK, I had every intention of continuing my monthy payments so my UK bank had my first address. I panicked when I realized the exchange rate and didn't pay it. It has been almost 2 years and I just received a call from a (US) collection agency and panicked again and changed my tele #. They are obviously looking for me. I want to sort it out - fear of how much it is stops me searching for them? can they file and win a court case without finding me/telling me? I am now afraid someone is just going to turn up at my door. What should I do? I am willing to go for payments even though my earnings are sporadic due to various contracted jobs. I am guessing my debt in $'s is anywhere between 15,000 to 30,000.

The problem might be with your credit rating too. Fear will not help you and you can always call without them knowing from where and find out what they are willing to do, perhaps settle the debt. They cannot file a case in court without you receiving notice. If someone turns up at your door to serve a subpoena than that might happen -- it's up to you. Don't be afraid... and if you negotiate, be strong and you might be able to do better than you think. Good luck. :)
