I am the sole owner of a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu. (I have up-to-date auto-insurance and a spotless driving record.) My registration / license plates were set to expire soon, so I went to my local DMV Office to renew them (which should have been no problem at all.)
When I was trying to do the routine procedure (renewing my registration / plates), I was told by the DMV that I could not renew my registration / license plates (or do any business what-so-ever with the DMV) until my soundex # (my DMV record) was 'deflagged'. Unknowingly, I was in-trouble with the DMV because of my ex-boyfriend.
About 4 years ago, I co-bought a vehicle (a 2004 Dodge Stratus) with my boyfriend at that time… Since then, he and I split up, and he kept the Dodge Stratus. Legally, he and I BOTH still own the Dodge Stratus… But it's considered his car. (He makes all the payments, he has it insured, he is the only one with keys to the car, and the only own that drives it.) I have had nothing to do with him or that Dodge Stratus in years!
Well, come to find out, he let his auto-insurance lapse (he had been driving the Dodge Stratus around, un-insured, for over 6-months… which had lead to the suspension of the Dodge Stratus's registration / license plates, and a penalty fine of almost $2,000 due to the DMV. As a result of him choosing to not pay this fine / completely ignoring his responsibilities… I was forced to turn in the registration / license plates for my own vehicle (the Chevrolet Malibu) since I am the co-owner of his Dodge Stratus.
I have been bothering him for the last 2+ months to take care of this DMV situation… But he couldn't care less. I have no idea when / IF he will ever rectify this DMV situation. In the meantime, I have to keep my own car (the Chevrolet Malibu) off the road (because it has no license plates), and all of my DMV privileges are suspended until: (1) All DMV fine monies (approx. $2,000) have been paid, and (2) He gets current auto-insurance for the Dodge Stratus. I asked the DMV if I could remove my name from the Dodge Status's title… The answer is NO, until the fine monies are paid and the Dodge Stratus is insured. The DMV told me that there is absolutely nothing that I can do.
Looking back, obviously, I regret purchasing the Dodge Stratus with a guy that turned-out to be so irresponsible. It upsets me that I am the responsible one – I have insurance on my car (the Chevrolet Malibu) – But I had to turn in my tags and give up my driving privileges because of his disregard for the auto-insurance laws. I have no way to pay the amount of fines (approx. $2,000) that my ex-boyfriend has accrued… What can I do? Please help!
