I am a nurse practitioner and last year I changed jobs. My malpractice insurance at my old job was held by my employer. I left April in I have recently been made aware that they cancelled my insurance March 30. I was not notified.
I was also recently made aware that I was involved in a case that may become litigious. Although I was involved, the problem appears to be a system error, and the doctor who is primary in the case did not address some lab work and the patient had a bleeding episode. I am concerned that I may be sued as well. We live on the border between NY and PA.
My concern is the lapse in coverage and my exposure.

I'd suggest calling your home insurance agent. Many companies offer professional insurance along with the homeowner's policy.

If you are sued arising out of an incident at your prior place of employment, that insurer is on the hook for that episode.
As a PA, the primary physician that you were operating under is more exposed than you are, or ever will be.
As far as being sued, join the club, being sued is nothing.
However, make sure if you are sued, you cooperate with the insurance company in your defense.

You should immediately inquire about professional insurance.

Thank you for your response.
I am not a PA. I'm nurse practitioner. The NY and PA law grants be collaborative practice, not supervisory practice.

I have procured malpractice insurance since. I have recently been made aware that with the doh investigation they have concluded that this was a systems error and that the facility seems to be liable not us individually. In other words they don't think it was negligence.

Well, bully for you.
It's always good news for us when we hear everything ended well.
Thank you for healing or at least administering to the sick.
